Episode 21: Fighting the Good Fight through Waldorf Education with Whitney MacDonald

When my husband John and I first heard Whitney MacDonald speak, we were floored at the breadth and depth of information he offered his audience. He was a guest speaker at our children's Waldorf school and he was speaking about rites of passage and helping boys transition into manhood. Because of him I became enthralled with stories of the hero's journey and in Joseph Campbell's work (he often recommends "The Power of Myth" which is a book written from a PBS documentary where Bill Moyers interviewed Joseph Campbell... it is excellent- you can find it on YouTube and I highly recommend it as well. I've included the link below in the resources).

Whitney is a calming presence, a grounded, generous and very noble man, and a very learned individual. In short, he is a mensch. I am excited to have you hear him speak and generously share what he has lived and what he has learned.

Enjoy the conversation and thanks for listening!

Whitney MacDonald has been involved in Waldorf Education for over twenty years.  After receiving his Masters in Education and Waldorf certification at Antioch University he taught at the Emerson Waldorf School where he carried a class from first through eighth grade and then became the school’s PE/movement teacher.  During that time he served in various roles including faculty chair, college chair, athletic director, community outreach coordinator, head of the school’s social inclusion program (which works with teasing, bullying and social issues) and created the school’s health education program.  He coached many of the school’s athletic teams and has over thirty years of coaching experience.  He has specialized training in Spacial Dynamics, Social Inclusion, Simplicity Parenting, conflict resolution and athletics coaching.  For the past ten years Whitney has been working extensively mentoring schools and teachers, participating in and leading teacher trainings and conducting workshops on parenting, movement and Waldorf curriculum and also leading camps for children.  He has a particular interest in working with teens and fathers.  Whitney is the father of two sons who graduated from Waldorf schools and lives in North Carolina with his wife, Amy.

Episode 20: Welcome to Earth with Daniel Vitalis

Almost a decade ago, my partner and I were in unchartered territory. We had been vegan for some time (him wayyyyy longer than me, and raw vegan no less!) and with our first child on the way, my body began to ask for something different as far as nutrition, exercise, community, and life in general. Enter Daniel Vitalis! We got to spend a day with Daniel foraging and talking about everything under the sun including where we- and the world- may be headed and also found out he was going through major changes of his own. We've followed his very compelling, very relevant work ever since, because his warm, strong, and authentic presence left an impression on us that lasts until today.

Episode 19: The Male Renaissance, Music, Women & Chicken with Eugene Gant

I first met Eugene about a decade ago at a beach clean up at South Beach. While everyone was complaining about the heat and the trash, he was talking some serious spiritual talk and singing Queen all up and down the beach. I knew immediately that he was good people and someone I'd like to know more about. I was fortunate enough to host him a few times at the lululemon store I was managing on South Beach at the time and to attend his Naam Yoga classes and workshops. Eugene is an excellent reminder that we are grounded here on Earth and we have to do the work but also that we are star people and are so much more than we are used to thinking we are. He is a true expression of the duality of darkness and light. And he totally keeps it real! In the company of Eugene, you will surely be doing some dancing, some cacao drinking, some singing, some yoga, some laughing, or all of the above- maybe simultaneously! If you are a local to Miami, please check out one of his classes or workshops or new moon/full moon meditations! I guarantee you will be moved and have a great time, too!

Episode 17: Joy, Empowered Liberation, and the "Tres Leches of Spirituality" with Ash Ruiz

I am so happy to bring you Ash Ruiz today! Ash is an embodiment of joy and love and it's so good to listen to him talk about these things and pretty much anything that is pouring out of him at any given moment. He is the first man I am featuring on the podcast. I will be featuring a few men in the next couple of months who, I feel, are helping usher the goddess from the underground in their own very special ways. I first met Ash in Miami at a CD release party with his band Here II Here where I was touched by their heartfelt performance. There is a snippet of my favorite song in the intro on today's episode (which you can find online on iTunes or on his website. Ash is a man of many talents as you will hear. He is also tons of FUN and I promise you're going to smile so much as you're listening in to him express his pure heart, stories of spirituality, and wisdom. His joy is infectious!

Thanks for listening and enjoy today's episode!

Joy, Empowered Liberation, and the "Tres Leches of Spirituality" with Ash Ruiz.

* BIO:

Ash Ruiz is a spiritual teacher, life coach, shunyata therapist, author, vocal coach, singer/songwriter. He has had the honor to guide, celebrate and support others in realizing and confidently being the loving intelligence they truly are for the past 20 years through speaking engagements, Satsangs, workshops, retreats, healing concerts, private and group sessions and by serving along with his group Here II Here as the melodious soundtrack for the greatest spiritual leaders of our time including Eckhart Tolle, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Gangaji, Adyashanti, Neale Donald Walsch, Michael Beckwith, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Jean Houston, Byron Katie and The Tibetan State Oracle to the Dalai Lama.

Just two weeks after his father passed away, a 16 year old Ash had a profound spiritual discovery while filming a music video as a member of the Latin boyband Menudo. The song was entitled “Welcome to the New World” and the video happened to be filmed in the ancient city of Machu Picchu, Peru. After the reverberations of that timeless moment settled Ash no longer experienced himself as “someone separate in a world” but now knew himself as a vast yet immediately present field of intimacy that naturally exists as a presence of benefit for all.

From Her Front Yard to Worldwide- a Chat with Yarnpreneur, Sabrina Famellos

Sabrina Famellos is the owner and one of the dyers at Anzula Luxury Fibers. The Annual journey began in the early 2000's; Sabrina crocheted accessories and hand spun yarn to sell at farmer's markets in the Bay Area and at a yarn shop and record store in Fresno, CA. In 2003, she started dyeing the fiber that she was spinning, selling both the roving and the hand spun yarn along with the crocheted accessories. For a long time she was a one woman show, crocheting, dyeing, and spinning in her spare moments. In 2008, the economy changed and she lost her teaching position. There, in the midst of chaos, Anzula was born. Anzula luxury fibers is an independent, woman-owned company of hand-dyed yarns and fibers made from the most luxurious fibers in the world. Episode 14: Hormonal Birth Control and Going Beyond Feminism with Holly Grigg-Spall

Today on the New Moon in Gemini, I am talking to Holly Grigg-Spall, writer, birth control truther, and author of the book “Sweetening the Pill or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control.” We talk about the harmful effects of hormonal birth control, taboos, pheromones, the patriarchy, and feminism. The information that Holly has gathered throughout her personal and professional life is remarkable; she has so much to teach about birth control and countless other women's issues. Holly's book "Sweetening the Pill" got the attention of Abby Epstein and Ricki Lake and she is currently in collaboration with them to release a new documentary about hormonal birth control which will hopefully be out by the end of the year. Can't wait for that!

I'm so excited for you all to listen to this and to pick up her book which you can do right here. It is so brilliantly written and informative. Even if you are a proponent of hormonal birth control, the book will enlighten and offer a lot of food for thought way beyond anecdotal evidence.

Enjoy the episode and thanks so much for listening!
